Q&A's for Dr. Mitch + Skin Care Guide

Updated: Apr 24

Welcome to my third blog post! Please bear with me as I am still new to all of this. If there's a specific topic you'd like to see discussed, feel free to email me. In this post, we'll catch up with some questions from my clients, and I'll also share a bit about some products and skincare tips to make your life a little easier.

Enjoy!

Dr. Mitch Q&A: Five clients questions for me!

What inspired you to start your own business?

My partner Nicola! My beautiful fiancée (one day we will tie the knot) is my inspiration. She is an entrepreneur and is constantly thinking of new products, ideas, and businesses.

She made me realise what is possible with a bit of courage and the right attitude. Back when she had her granola business and before kids, we would be up late packing boxes of nuts in the spare bedroom, and although it was stressful at the time, I really do look back on those days fondly. I used to joke that I was her COO.

The feeling of being in charge of your own professional life is one that I wanted again, and now I have it!

If I could use ONLY one of my own services for the long term, what would it be?

It would have to be anti-wrinkle/muscle relaxants (can't say the official name due to TGA). The results-to-cost ratio is just unbeatable. It makes me look fresher, and my skincare works better. I would miss dermal filler and Biostimulators (Rejuran), but that would be my ultimate choice.

What is the most unusual job I had before my current profession?

Unusual things I experienced a lot during medicine, particularly the hospital years. Any type of bodily fluid coming out of an orifice isn't that weird after a while (sorry to gross you out).

On the other hand, the most “different” job compared to my medical life would be my one summer as a Concrete Labourer! It was the most awful, difficult, painful work I have ever done. In the sun in Queensland, getting yelled at for 10-hour days to mix hot heavy concrete; I quit one morning at 3:30 am via text (not my finest moment).

What is the oddest request you have received in the cosmetic industry?

“Scrotox”. I don’t want to “yuk anyone’s yum” and completely understand there is a want for this treatment, but it just isn’t for me. I keep my treatments focused from the shoulders up (apart from underarm/hand sweating).

Where is the future of cosmetics going?

Natural, holistic, less is more! I feel like the aesthetic world is thankfully turning more holistic in terms of long-term thinking and personalised plans. Skincare is getting more targeted. Rejuran and other Biostimulators are letting our own body repair and restore itself. Filler is slowing down to more of a volume loss approach rather than more, MAFS (IYKYK). This is making me happier to be in this space and proud of how I can help people feel fresher in themselves!

Doctor's Guide: The Best Skincare for Anti-Ageing

As we journey through life, time inevitably leaves its mark on our skin. The signs of ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity, can be concerning for many of our clients.

Although regular anti-ageing cosmetic treatments (available at Doctor Mitch Aesthetics) can definitely prevent signs of aging; skincare is a tool which can often be overlooked.

As a practicing cosmetic doctor with more than a decade of experience in helping patients achieve healthy, youthful skin, I am often asked about the most effective skincare routine for anti-ageing. In this blog post, I aim to provide a quick guide to the best skincare practices backed by science and endorsed by professionals. I've also provided some personal favourites!

1. Sun Protection: The Ultimate Anti-Ageing Weapon

When it comes to preventing premature ageing, sunscreen is your best friend. The harmful UV rays emitted by the sun are one of the primary causes of skin ageing. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, resulting in wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin.

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, regardless of the weather. Look for sunscreens that contain ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for optimal protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Recommended:

Simple as that Vegan Sunscreen (this is more of a natural, “barrier” sunscreen with minimal ingredients, great for the whole family!)

2. Retinoids: The Gold Standard in Anti-Ageing

Retinoids, derivatives of vitamin A, have long been hailed as the gold standard in anti-ageing skincare. These powerful compounds work by increasing cell turnover, stimulating collagen production, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Over-the-counter retinol creams are available, but for maximum efficacy, prescription-strength retinoids such as tretinoin are often recommended. That said, I've seen great results from store bought products if you're wanting to start with something gentle.

It's essential to introduce retinoids into your skincare routine gradually to minimise irritation and sensitivity (VERY IMPORTANT). Start by using them a few times a week (sometimes even once a week) and gradually increase frequency as your skin adjusts.

Recommended:

This is is tricky one. There are chemist brands, online companies and prescription strength. Chat to me next treatment as I can offer complimentary prescriptions with treatments. However, if you're looking for something that still contains Retinol and Retinal (but isn't as strong), I highly recommend the below:

Rationale The Night Creme (expensive but worth it! Lasts a long time as you only need a small amount)

3. Hydration is Key

Keeping your skin hydrated is crucial for maintaining its youthful appearance. As we age, the skin's natural moisture barrier weakens, leading to dryness and dullness. Incorporating hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides into your skincare routine can help replenish lost moisture and improve skin texture.

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers that are suitable for your skin type. Applying a serum and moisturiser twice daily, especially after cleansing or using active ingredients like retinoids, can help lock in moisture and keep your skin supple.

Recommended:

Drunk Elephant Night Serum (if you're wanting to avoid retinoids but still want that cell turnover to help lock in moisture, I recommend using this serum 3 x per week before your night cream.

4. Antioxidants: Defenders Against Free Radicals

Antioxidants play a vital role in protecting the skin from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which contribute to premature ageing. Vitamin C, in particular, is a potent antioxidant that helps brighten the skin, even out skin tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Incorporate a vitamin C serum into your morning skincare routine to reap its benefits. Look for stable formulations with a concentration of around 10-20% for optimal efficacy. Pairing vitamin C with vitamin E can enhance its antioxidant properties and provide additional protection against environmental damage.

Recommended:

Sunday Riley CEO cream (a great day cream with Vitamin C)

Other

Skinstitut Moisture Defence Normal Skin (great everyday moisturiser for simple skin... only downside is it's size!)

Rationale Cleanser (this cleanser is great for restoring skin barrier function and contains intercellular lipids and ceramides. It's a cream cleanser so not for everyone!)

5. Consistency is Key

Consistency is crucial when it comes to skincare, especially anti-ageing. While it's tempting to try every new product that promises miraculous results, sticking to a simple yet effective routine is often the key to success (you don't need to buy all of the products above! Skincare is so subjective so I wanted to provide options, do your research! Identify the core ingredients that address your specific skincare concerns, and incorporate them into your daily regimen.

Remember that patience is essential when it comes to seeing results with skincare products and any treatment. It can take weeks or even months of consistent use to notice significant improvements in your skin's texture and appearance. Be diligent with your skincare routine, and the results will follow.

In conclusion, achieving youthful, radiant skin is not an impossible feat, thanks to advancements in skincare science. By prioritising sun protection, incorporating retinoids, hydrating the skin and harnessing the power of antioxidants alongside your cosmetic treatments, you can help effectively combat the signs of ageing and hopefully achieve a fresh glow!
